PHNOM PENH: The failed escape attempt of a Taiwanese drug trafficker in Siem Reap has resulted in a total of 13 people being arrested and put in Prey Sar Prison, about 45 minutes southwest of Phnom Penh.

On August 17, a group of masked assailants freed a drug trafficker from a 52 year sentence while he was at a supervised dental appointment at a private clinic in Siem Reap. The incident was caught on tape and shows those in masks holding the police and prison officials at gunpoint while the prisoner calmly walks out of the office.

The prisoner was caught in Phnom Penh five days later and authorities have made a dozen arrests in connection to the case. On the evening of August 29, the 13 suspects were placed in Cambodia’s largest prison on multiple charges including conspiracy to commit armed robbery, illegal detention, aggravated robbery, brandishing weapons in public and money laundering under the Law on Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing.

The 13 prisoners are of multiple nationalities including Chinese, Cambodian, American and Turkish.
